Microsoft shuts chatrooms over safety fears
Updated 24 September 2003, 08.04

Computer giant Microsoft has said it will shut its chatrooms after fears over child safety.

All MSN Chatrooms in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and most of Asia will be closed from 14 October.

MSN chatrooms in other parts of the world will be changed, meaning they will either be looked after by an adult or people will have to have a credit card to use them.

Children's charities think this is a great idea, and should protect children from people pretending to be someone they are not.

Some people reckon it might put pressure on other unsupervised chatrooms to close.

Concerned

MSN UK spokesman Matt Whittingham said the company had thought about this decision for a long time.

He said: "We have been concerned about chatrooms for a while."

Microsoft will not be shutting its MSN Messenger service, which lets you have much more control over who you talk to.
