  Texts to fight school skippers
Updated 23 September 2003, 07.55
Schools are planning to start using texts
A school is texting parents to tell them if their kids are bunking off.

Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, near Durham, texts parents to ask if there is a good reason for their child not being in class.

Head teacher Steve Gater said: "By texting parents, we are sending a powerful signal to them and their children that absence is not to be tolerated."

Kids are also being kept safe by the system, as it allows parents to know if a child goes missing straight away.

The government recently said that about 50,000 children a day are skipping school.

It's hoped that schemes like this, which have been successfully tested in Wales and Ireland, can get kids off the streets and into classrooms.
