Shocking cancer pix could go on fag packets
Updated 04 August 2003, 13.59
Ads in Canada have shown pictures of cancer victims
Shocking pictures of smokers who have got cancer could be put on cigarette packets to encourage people to kick the habit.

It comes after bigger and bolder health warnings - saying things like "smoking kills" - were put on cigarette packets across Europe earlier this year.

Bigger and bolder warnings were brought in earlier this year

Experts reckon that people are now getting used to these warnings, so they're not as effective.

They say that the health warnings need to be updated to make sure that people are still taking notice of them.

One idea is to put pictures of diseased lungs on the packets, alongside a warning saying how quickly cancer can kill people.

Survey

This has already been tried out in Canada, but some people found the ads annoying, and started defending their right to smoke.

The experts based their findings on a survey of smokers in seven countries.

If you're worried about smoking, there's help and advice available on the websites on the right of this page.
