  UK getting windpower go-ahead
Updated 14 July 2003, 07.36
Wind Farm
The UK's about to be given a big boost in going green.

The government's to give the go-ahead to build thousands of new wind turbines off the British coast.

They'll create electricity through wind power.

Cleaner fuel

Producing energy by using wind is seen as much more environmentally-friendly than burning fossil fuels.

Fact File
Windy facts
They'll make as much electricity as 6 nuclear power stations
They'll be on the seabed around the North West coast, the Wash and the Thames Estuary
20,000 jobs will be created
It'll cost 6bn

The new turbines will produce 5% of the UK's electricity.

That's more than 10 times what wind farms make at the moment.

A group of important engineers - The Institute of Civil Engineers - have said it's good thing but we need so much energy that wind power won't be able to provide all of it.

And some people will worry about birds and wildlife being disturbed when the building starts.
