Experts in Chile have been running tests on the baffling 12-metre blob and say it's the carcass of a sperm whale.

Some people had thought it was a giant octopus or even a completely new species of creature.

But researchers at the Museum of Natural History in Santiago found the big lump of flesh contained the glands of a sperm whale.

Moby Dick

The sperm whale, made famous by Herman Melville's Moby Dick, is the largest of the toothed whales and dives deeper than any other whale.

When a sperm whale dies at sea, it rots until its bones sink to the bottom, leaving a big blob of skin and blubber floating in the water.
