Your teeth could hold asthma clues
Updated 10 July 2003, 09.44
Scientists are studying a link between milk teeth and asthma
Scientists are studying kids' teeth to work out why some people get asthma.

One young asthma sufferer

They will look at a sample of 500 milk teeth - the ones that fall out before your big teeth come through.

The scientists have collected teeth from 250 kids who have asthma and 250 kids who haven't to check out the differences.

Milk teeth start to develop when a baby is in its mother's womb and experts reckon a child's chances of getting asthma might be linked to what its mother eats.

Scientists reckon kids who don't get enough important minerals like iron and selenium are more likely to get asthma.

The tooth's enamel - the hard coating on teeth - will show whether the child's had enough of these minerals from his or her mum.

Iron is found in meat, vegetables and cereals, while Brazil nuts, fish, meat, cereals and dairy products have loads of selenium.
