Brit explorer's Atlantic balloon crossing fails
Updated 29 June 2003, 18.19

An attempt to cross the Atlantic in a balloon has failed
A British explorer has failed in his second attempt to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in a hot air balloon.

Weather experts reckoned that there wouldn't have been enough wind to have carried the balloon all the way from the US to the UK.

The attempt was supposed to have lasted around seven days, but with poor wind David Hempleman-Adams' balloon could have been in the air as long as 10 or 11 days.

That might have meant the attempt having to crash into the water.

Rather than risk that Hempleman-Adams chose to make a landing in the state of Massachusetts, just over a day after taking off from Pittsburgh.

He had been attempting to make the journey in an open wicker basket rather than a hi-tech capsule.

Nigel Mitchell from the attempt's flight control team said: "David is of course very disappointed, but also a very determined man. He is determined to persevere and try again."
