Broken wing seal 'caused shuttle disaster'
Updated 07 May 2003, 17.33
Nasa scientists are investigating the wreckage
The Columbia space shuttle disaster was probably caused by a broken seal or panel on one of the wings, an inquiry says.

Investigators from Nasa say a bit of the left wing was damaged when the Columbia launched in January this year.

They reckon that the broken bit let in really hot gases when the shuttle tried to land, and those gases led to the shuttle breaking up - killing seven astronauts.

Video footage of the shuttle launching showed a piece of foam striking the left wing, but the experts haven't said that was the cause of the broken seal or panel.

Tests are now being done to work out if that piece of foam was the reason why the shuttle exploded.

The experts are firing pieces of foam at actual shuttle parts to see how much damage they do.

Should we continue to explore space?
opening quoteI think that we should, because we can do so many things there that will help us. And I think the Columbia crew wouldn't want us to give up. closing quote
