  Brushing too hard 'damages teeth'
Updated 19 June 2003, 09.56
Boy brushing his teeth
Brushing your teeth too hard and for too long could permanently damage them, according to a study.

Many people think the harder you brush your teeth the cleaner they get.

But experts say that's probably not true.

Take it easy

In fact, they found it makes it more likely you'll permanently damage the protective layer on teeth and harm gums.

They say people should brush their teeth for two minutes, and only use as much pressure as the weight of an orange.

Any longer than two minutes and you're not getting rid of any more plaque - the nasty stuff which causes tooth decay.

If you're not sure you're doing it right, the scientists say get your dentist to show you how.
