  US Mars mission finally launches
Updated 11 June 2003, 08.35
The US Mars mission has finally launched
The first of two US missions to Mars has finally blasted off after bad weather twice delayed its launch.

A Delta II rocket carrying a robotic vehicle called Spirit took off from Cape Canaveral in Florida at around 6pm on Tuesday.

A second identical vehicle called Opportunity will be launched later in the month, and a European mission to the planet was launched a week ago.

The reason so many missions are trying to get to Mars at the moment is because it is much closer to the Earth than normal, just seven months away.

Once they get to Mars, early in 2004, the Spirit and Opportunity will head for two parts of the planet where scientists think there is evidence of water.

Scientists think that where there is water there is a chance that some form of life may have once existed, however small that life might have been.
