Smoking in films encourages kids to start
Updated 10 June 2003, 10.07

If you watch lots of films with smoking in you're three times more likely to start yourself than kids who don't, according to a new US study.

They picked thousands of children who said they had never smoked and then two years later went back to see if they'd started.

The researchers found that those who watched the most films with smoking in were much more likely to have tried the habit themselves.

The study also reckons that more than half of the children who started smoking did so only because they'd seen people lighting up in the movies.

However one expert did say that although the two things do seem linked, it doesn't necessarily mean that kids who see smoking in films will start themselves.

In the past lots of different studies have tried to link smoking and films, but this is one of the only ones to use children who don't smoke and then see if they start.

The study of more than 2,500 10-14 year olds was paid for by the US National Cancer Institute.
