Welsh village gets electricity at last
Updated 03 June 2003, 16.58

Imagine living in a village where you only have a few hours of power a day and you have use candles and gas lamps to light your house at night.

That's what life's been like for kids in the Welsh village of Cwm Brefi

But on Tuesday that all changed when their village was finally hooked up to the main electricity supply.

No fridges or toasters

This generator was used for electricity
This generator was used for electricity
The village has never been connected to the National Grid - the central electricity provider - because the village was too far away to reach.

So for years villagers have had to live without electric lights, TVs, the internet, toasters, fridges and freezers.

This means villagers have had to keep their milk cool by floating it in garden wells, and have never been able to have lights on the Christmas tree.

Limited power supply

The village now has electric lights
They had a limited amount of electricity supplied by diesel generators.

But the generators are only kept on for a few hours each day and stop working if too much electricity is used at one time.

The big switch on means kids from the village will now be able to watch TV whenever they want and type their homework up on computers, just like their classmates.

And they won't have to read by gas lamps and candles to before bedtime anymore either!
