Hi-tech gym hopes for couch potato kids
Updated 15 April 2003, 16.57

A leisure centre is hoping its new hi-tech gym will tempt couch potato kids away from their games consoles.

The centre has linked 25 exercise bikes to a special computer game that lets the riders compete against each other.

They're called Exertris Interactive Bikes.

The people running the Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne, Lancashire are hoping their plan will be so popular that loads of other gyms will want to use it too.

And it's not just the linked up bikes - called an 'X r-cade' - that should bring in younger fitness fanatics.

The gym also has plasma screen TVs, virtual projection and lights that look like they should be being used at a rock gig.

One of the men behind the bikes idea, Pendle Leisure Trust's chief Phil Storey, said: "When I first saw Exertris, I thought it would be ideal for motivating youngsters to get some exercise.

"By creating the arcade, we have a fitness concept that really does make exercise fun."
