Kids 'depend on txting for confidence'
Updated 04 April 2003, 13.53
mobile phone
Kids may be depending on their mobiles to boost their self-esteem, research has shown today.

It has been said that getting a call or a text has become a sign of popularity and makes kids feel important.

Ignoring other hobbies

Researchers say teenagers in particular are ignoring other hobbies so they can spend all their money on using their mobile phones.

Some have a lack in confidence in themselves and so getting more messages makes them feel more wanted.

Experts are worried that if kids depend on messages to give them a sense of worth then they will feel bad about themselves if they don't get as many messages as their friends.

£100,000 a day

Nine out of ten children now own a mobile phone. They are reported to spend £100,000 a day just on text messaging.

A 16-year-old girl was reported to have spent all her dinner money for the past three months on texting her friends!

Communication skills

Childalert, an advice service for parents, say that children's communication skills could suffer because they keep interrupting conversations to check their phones for messages.

Peer pressure was said to be the most likely reason for kids to want their own mobile phone. But some parents said they want their kids to have mobiles for safety reasons.
