Key shuttle debris may provide answers
Updated 20 March 2003, 11.35
There are loads of bits of the shuttle to check
The data recorder that was on the space shuttle Columbia when it broke up has been found in the US.

It records key data about what happened back in February when the shuttle was destroyed while coming into land.

All seven astronauts on board Columbia were killed in the disaster.

Nasa experts are looking through the debris for clues

Nasa experts now hope they will be able to work out more about why the shuttle's mission ended so tragically.

They know that it was because really hot gas got into the left wing and melted it, but they don't why that happened.

The recorder has been found almost completely intact, although at the moment no one knows if the tape inside is usable.

Should we continue to explore space?
opening quoteI think that we should, because we can do so many things there that will help us. And I think the Columbia crew wouldn't want us to give up. closing quote
