  Record year for computer games

Harry Potter game
More people will buy computer games and consoles in 2003 than ever before, says a new report.

It looks like we'll spend £11.5bn on games, and buy an incredible 32 million consoles worldwide.

And we bought 30 million in 2002!

The report is by a research firm called ScreenDigest.

It's a sign that people like gaming almost as much as TV and films now.

In 2002 in the UK, more money was spent on games than on renting videos or going to the cinema.

Not surprising when you think a million copies of GTA: Vice City flew out of the shops in just eight weeks up to Christmas.

One downside is that developing games has got really expensive because each has to be so much better than the last.

So smaller game studios might struggle and it's only the big ones which end up making all the games.
