Liberty X launch anti phone crime campaign
Updated 28 March 2003, 15.24

Liberty X are helping to launch a crackdown on mobile phone thieves that could lower the chances of you having your mobile stolen.

The Immobilise Phone Crime campaign is trying to teach kids that mobile phone crime is a serious issue.

Phones are blocked

People who have their phones nicked should ring a special number that will block the phone from being used again - meaning no-one else will want to buy it.

Fact File
How to protect your phone
Get the "IMEI" identity number of your phone by dialling *#06#
If your phone is stolen, ring 08701 123123
Tell them your mobile's the IMEI number
All calls will then be immediately barred
A £1.5m scheme has been launched to show thieves that there's no point stealing phones if they can be blocked.

Around 30% of all street crime in the UK is mobile phone theft, and police hope that figure will drop if the phones won't work.

Clever thieves could still re-programme the phones to get them going again, but if they get caught they could be sent to jail for five years.

440,330 stolen mobiles have been blocked since November 2002, meaning they can't be used on any network.
