'Rest in Peace, Crew of Columbia'
Updated 05 February 2003, 09.20

By Lizo Mzimba
Newsround in Houston, Texas

All around Houston, American flags flew at half mast and buldings carried messages of support.

'Rest in Peace, Crew of Columbia' read one, 'Seven Astronauts, One Dream' read another.

Here in the city that's home to NASA's Mission Control, they're fiercely proud of the Space Agency.

And Saturday's tragedy has hit them especially hard. 'We're all still in shock,' one person told me.

During Tuesday's Memorial Service people lined the city's streets, a few listening on radios while children and adults laid flowers at the entrance to the Space Center.

From most of the people, the message seemed to be the same. They'll never forget what happened to the Space Shuttle Columbia.

But they want space exploration to go on, because they feel to abandon it would be an even greater tragedy.

Should we continue to explore space?
opening quoteI think that we should, because we can do so many things there that will help us. And I think the Columbia crew wouldn't want us to give up. closing quote
