  Scientists hunt Northumberland 'yeti'
Updated 17 January 2003, 15.27
What the 'Yeti' may look like
What's eight feet tall, covered in hair and roams around a wood in Northumberland?

Well, whatever it is, it's no joke for people living near Bolam Lake.

A number of fishermen and walkers at the beauty spot near Belsay have spotted a "hairy man-beast" like the legendary Yeti of the Himalaya mountains in Nepal.

And on Friday a team from the Centre for Fortean Zoology in Exeter are beginning an expedition to find the creature.

It is being led by scientist Jonathan Downes.

He says there have been a couple of "close encounters" with the beast.

And his team will try to tempt the beast into a trap by offering it food.

"We don't know what it is - but we have some photographs of footprints."
