Young engineers race own F1 cars
Updated 10 January 2003, 17.34
Teams race their cars
Designing and racing your own Formula One cars might not sound like schoolwork.

But for thousands of kids it's been just that.

F1 in schools is a challenge to get you all interested in being engineers beacuse there aren't enough, apparently.

The UK needs 35,000 engineers a year, but only 10,000 people manage it.

There's a race at the end to see who designed and built the best car.

Some 3,500 budding petrolheads entered and tinkered, tested and fine-tuned.

Celeb guest

Prime Minister Tony Blair's impressed with the cars
They're model-size but the design is done using state-of-the-art 3D software.

It's not just for fun: F1 counts towards GCSE coursework skills, too.

One girl said: "I think most of the girls think that racing cars is a boy thing to do but I like using my hands and making things."

Prime Minister Tony Blair even popped by to check out the speed freaks.

The teams are judged on presentation and final race times just like real F1.

The 2003 winners were Ramsay Abbey High School from Cambridge.

If you think your school's got what it takes to take be in the fast lane next year click on the link right for details.
