Sea beast skeleton found in Mexico
Updated 30 December 2002, 14.59

A complete skeleton of the biggest reptile that ever existed has been unearthed in Mexico.

Fact File
Sea monster
Type of animal: Plesiosaur (pliosaur)
Food: snacked on smaller swimming reptiles
Size: Up to 25 metres
Weight: Up to 150 tonnes
The creature - a type of plesiosaur - was 20 metres long and had machete-sized teeth that could bite through granite.

The fossilised bones are those of a liopleurodon - a fierce predator that ruled the oceans about 150 million years ago.

It was discovered by German and Mexican scientists and the bones are to be shipped to Germany for reconstruction.

Last meal

Although many liopleurodon remains have been unearthed before, none have been as complete as the Mexico discovery.

Scientists plan to use the skeleton to study how the monster of the deep lived and what it ate for its last meal.
