Text and e-mail bullying on the increase
Updated 25 November 2002, 17.32
Bullying via text and e-mail is increasing
Experts are warning that bullying by text message and e-mail is on the increase.

Sending hurtful messages using mobiles and the internet is becoming more popular because it's quick, easy and difficult to trace.

Although cyber bullying is different from being pushed around in the playground, it can be just as upsetting.

Courtney, 14, was a victim of bullies in a chat room. Although her tormentors didn't try to hide their identity she never met them face-to -face.

Fact File
Cyber bully facts
1 in 4 children have suffered from online or text bullying
7% have been harrassed in internet chat rooms
4% have been bullied via e-mail
She told CBBC Newsround: "The worst thing they did to me was how they got all my friends to join them in bullying me. That really upset me.

"It made me feel really upset and that I was all alone against loads of other people who didn't like me," said Courtney.

Cyber bullying expert Wendy McAuliffe gave some tips on what to do if you're being bullied online or by text:

  • You must make sure you keep all your personal details a secret
  • Don't arrange to meet an internet friend in real life
  • If someone is upsetting you online don't talk to them
  • If you are getting bullied make sure you tell an adult
