Updated 12 November 2002, 11.16
Text scams can con people into spending loads of money
Children are being caught out by conmen who target them with dodgy text messages.

The government has warned that scams through texts and e-mails are on the rise, and the person who receives them can end up paying out lots of cash.

Young people often get caught out because they send more texts than any other age group.

40 times a day

Children are also targeted on email
One high-profile scam involved people being sent a text message saying "I fancy you".

It urged the person to call them back on an expensive rate phone line, but didn't make it clear who they were ringing or what the charges were.

Some people who've been targeted by text scams have reported receiving the same message up to 40 times a day.

Stopped

Lots of young people also receive loads of spam, or unwanted e-mails, from companies asking for personal details and trying to get money out of them.

The government is urging anyone who thinks they've been sent a text or e-mail scam to contact the Department of Trade and Industry, so companies can be caught and stopped.
