  Why are people left-handed?
Updated 13 August 2002, 16.11

About 10% of the population is left-handed. But you're not born left-handed.

It all starts when you're a baby and you start to do things more with one hand than the other.

The brain is separated into 2 main areas - the left and the right.

If you are left-handed you will be controlled by the right side of the brain.

Fact File
Are you more left-handed than you think?
You have an itch in the centre of your back - which hand do you scratch it with?
Interlock your fingers. Which thumb is uppermost?
Start clapping. Which hand is uppermost?
Try winking. Which eye do you wink with?
Fold your arms. Which arm is uppermost?

This side deals with the creative and artistic things in life.

However, right-handed people are controlled by the left side of the brain, which deals with logic, reasoning and maths!

Left-handed people are often seen as clumsy. But this is more to do with they're being forced to use right-handed tools, such as scissors and tin openers.

Someone who uses both hands equally is ambidextrous.

Thanks to the Left Hander's Day website for their information.
