Updated 27 June 2002, 11.11
Mobiles are everywhere and it's getting noisy!
A new invention could get rid of the pesky problem of mobiles going off in the cinema.

Japanese engineers have come up with a way of blocking the signals using wood panels containing magnetic material.

A quiet room

Fact File
How it works
Magnetic ferrite is sandwiched between two panels of wood
It absorbs most of the radio signal, cutting it dead

You could put the panels in cinemas, theatres or even classrooms!

You just couldn't yak on your mobile in a room built out of the panels.

In many public places in Japan - like trains and cinemas - people are asked to switch off their mobiles or put them on silent tone.

But there's always someone who forgets or ignores it.
