  Star Trek-style teleport breakthrough
Updated 17 June 2002, 15.23
It'll be a long time before people are teleported
Australian scientists say they've made a breakthrough once thought possible only in science fiction.

They claim to have teleported a laser beam from one part of a room to another.

Teleporting is when an object is made to disappear from one place and reappear in another.

Beam me up

If you've seen Star Trek, that's the "Beam me up" part!

Fact File
How is it done?
All the atoms which make up an object are analysed
An atomic copy of the object is created in another place
The original is destroyed so the copy can exist - not good for people!

It means in theory space and time wouldn't matter any more if you were trying to get somewhere.

But teleporting humans is a REALLY long way off.

Every single one of the trillions of atoms that make up your body would have to be figured out first.

In reality, it will probably be used to send data much faster.
