Coral reef plans hit by sinking 'ghost' ship
Updated 20 May 2002, 13.15
The sunken Spiegel Grove ship
Plans to build a fake coral reef in Florida went wrong when a 'ghost' ship mysteriously sank on its own.

Conservationists had planned to sink the old Navy ship under controlled conditions, so that it landed on its side.

After six months, these sunken ships get covered in barnacles and sea urchins, which attract 'nibbling fish' and sea predators.

After about 10 years, coral starts to form, and they make the colourful coral reefs, which the Florida Keys are famous for.

Race onto lifeboats

Scuba-diving around coral reefs is popular in Florida Keys
But the ship, called The Spiegel Grove, sank before the volunteers had the chance to control it.

Dozens of conservationists on board the ship had to race onto lifeboats when it started sinking. Luckily everyone was OK.

The conservationists have no idea why the ship sank so suddenly on its own, but they're disappointed it has hit their plans for a new coral reef.
