E-mail races ahead of snail mail
Updated 13 March 2002, 11.35
Email outpaces snail mail
Snail mail is living up to its name, as more people are choosing speedy e-mail to send their messages.

Electronic mail raced ahead of its paper-based rival in January, with almost twice as many e-mails sent than letters.

Could it be curtains for old-fashioned post?
Could it be curtains for old-fashioned post?
A company who count the amount of people using the internet said 550m e-mails were sent in January, compared with only 300m letters.

They also worked out that people in the UK are top of the Euro league, sending 170m more than France and a whopping 185m more than Germany.

Can't compare

But the Royal Mail reckons the numbers don't add up, because they say e-mail and the post are used for different things.

They point out that the amount of letters we're sending is rising by 3% a year, and said sending things like jokes or instant messages shouldn't be compared with letters.
