Text message record broken in Britain
Updated 22 January 2002, 20.03
Text messaging
Are you text message mad?

If so, you may have helped to break the record for the most messages ever sent in Britain last year.

We sent a whopping 12.2 billion texts in 2001, which is nearly double what we sent in the Millennium year.

Mobiles for Christmas

And Christmas did a lot to boost that record - we sent 1.3 billion festive messages in December alone, the Mobile Data Association reported.

It's thought lots of people got new mobile phones for Christmas which they used to send messages to their family and mates.

Brits now send an average of 42 million texts a day - the highest it's ever been.
