Mobiles the key to naming that tune
Updated 29 November 2001, 12.50

If you've ever heard a top song on the radio but missed who it was by, the answer could be on the way.

Top scientists have found a way for you to use your mobile phone to identify a track from just a few seconds of music.

Just hold your phone to the radio and it will send a sample of the music to your mobile phone company.

Their computers will recognise the song, and send you a text message telling you what it is.

More than 100,000 songs

If you really like the song, you could even choose to buy it using your mobile phone too.

The company behind the technology, Philips, are hoping to have a database of around 100,000 songs available for people to buy.

The service isn't available yet - but we'll tell you on CBBC Newsround Online when it launches.
