  Pac Man 'best video game'
Updated 13 November 2001, 16.19

What's the best computer game character ever?

Lara Croft? Pokemon?

Well, according to a survey by Dixons electrical stores it's Pac Man.

If you've never heard of it, that could be because it came out in 1981. It's considered a 'classic' and was originally played in arcades.

Dots and fruit

It features a little round blob going round a maze chomping on dots, fruit and ghosts and trying not to get caught.

The survey, which asked 500 games & PC buyers, was to celebrate the 40th birthday of the video game and the top ten shaped up like this:

1) Pac Man 39%
2) Sonic The Hedgehog 17%
3) Super Mario 12%
4) Lara Croft 10%
5) Donkey Kong 8%
6) Pokemon (all characters) 6%
7) Yoshi 4%
8) Harry Potter 2%
9) Ray Man 1%
10) Max Pair 1%

But what was even more surprising was the new Harry Potter game making it in there weeks before it's release.

That means when it comes out it could well knock Pac Man off the list.
