What it's like to play the Xbox
Updated 22 October 2001, 18.51
Xbox causes a stir
Microsoft's Xbox games console was launched in Europe last week. Darren Waters was one of the first people to get his hands on it. So what did he think of it?

It's the most powerful games console on earth.

The Xbox promises to change the way we all player computer games and boasts graphics, sound and power to beat the Playstation 2.

It's much bigger than the PS2 and a lot heavier, and won't win any beauty contests.

Thrilling games

I played titles like Halo, NFL Fever 2002, Project Gotham Racing and Dead or Alive 3 and they look as good as, if not better, than similar games on the Playstation 2.

The graphics are fantastic, the sound brilliant and they are really thrilling to play, especially Halo, which is the best game I've ever played.

The big difference between the two machines is the hard disc drive inside the Xbox, which means games can be more complex and more realistic.

What's real?

Microsoft, the maker of Xbox, says it will be the first console to have games that look like films and TV, where you can be the hero and save the world.

But it isn't in the shops in Britain until March next year and will cost 299. If you can't wait, Playstation 2 is still worth buying.

But the Xbox promises to be the must-have games console for 2002.
