Internet brings the world to Bulgaria
Updated 04 October 2001, 14.20

A remote village in Bulgaria may be connected to the rest of the world if plans for a wireless internet connection work.

Luki, a mining town in the Rhodope mountains, is building a radio tower that will bring the Internet to the 8,000 people who live in the mountains.

The mines in the area are beginning to run out of the lead and zinc ore that have supported the people in the area.

But without the mines the people have had to find new ways of making a living.

They hope that the internet will help them, perhaps by showing off the area to potential tourists or helping local craftsmen sell over the world wide web.

E-mailing penfriends

The link will also help the local schools by providing many more resources than they currently have and also by allowing students to e-mail penfriends in other countries.

The tower is being paid for by the businesses, schools and town of Luki, a grant from the US Peace Corps and people in America.
