Game review: Lego Pirates of the Caribbean

Game play from Lego Pirates of the Caribbean

Action - Adventure

Format reviewed

PlayStation 3

Join Captain Jack Sparrow in this swashbuckling adventure, as you build your way through all four of the Pirates of Caribbean movies. You can take control of all the characters from the films from Will Turner to Captain Barbossa.

Each character has different abilities, like strength and the ability to throw things. You need to think which character to use to complete the game.

This is now the ninth game Lego has released in this sort of style, the other eight being (in chronological order): Lego Star Wars: The Video Game; Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy; Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga; Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures; Lego Batman: The Videogame; Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues; Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4; Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars.

That's a lot, isn't it?

A shot from the game

You would have thought the concept of this game has got a bit boring now because it's very over-used, and yes this is pretty much the same as the other games. The only thing that has changed are the characters and their abilities, as well as the scenery.

Does this make it boring? NO! It still impresses, even though Lego has used this idea to death. Maybe it's just because we're huge pirates of the Caribbean fans but we think this is one of Lego's better games - it's certainly better than the last Harry Potter one.

The fun things that you get to do? Pretty much the whole game. It makes you think hard, to work out some puzzles - and it even makes the third film look good! (We thought the third film was dreadful).

The gameplay is good in this game. The cut scenes aren't too long so there isn't much waiting around. The only small problem we have with the game are the storylines.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean

The first three films themselves aren't that easy to understand alone, especially for children, so trying to explain that in a video game would be quite a challenge. You can't really blame the game designers though. It wasn't their fault it's such a complicated story.

The other thing is that they had to replace some of the scenes, for example the infamous scene where Captain Jack Sparrow is about to be hanged is replaced with Jack Sparrow in the stocks - which is a bit lame, but you can see why it was done.

The graphics in this game are probably the best out of all the Lego games: maybe it's just because it's newer, but nonetheless, great graphics.

This game is actually quite puzzling at points, in a good way though. The actual fighting scenes are very easy however.

Hit or miss?

If you are getting tired of Lego games you should probably leave this one out, unless you're a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan. If you have never played a Lego game before don't bother with any of the rest, (well maybe the first Lego Star Wars), just pick up this game and get lost in the creative world Lego has made up.

Harry, 11, Hampshire, England

"Rubbish. Far too easy. Lego has produced pretty much the same game a million times over since 2005."
