Is it fair to have to pay for playgrounds?

Old playground

Playground where you pay to play

Kids are going to have to pay to use a playground in a London park at weekends.

The Battersea Park play area will cost £2.50 for a visit on Saturdays and Sundays, and some people are really upset about this.

But the council says the playground's expensive to run and that the price isn't too bad compared to a cinema ticket.

What do you think? Is it fair to have to pay, or should playing in the park be free?

Your comments

"It is so unfair, I visit Battersea Park adventure playground nearly every weekend in the summer. I find it a great way to chat and meet up with my friends. I won't be able to do that anymore as we, my brothers and I won't be able to spend £2.50 each time we visit it!"

Saoirse, 12, London, England

"I find it shocking to find that they are making these people pay just for their kids to PLAY! It's a public thing! What about people who need to save money hmm? Then they can't let their children play. It's not fair!"

Margaret, 12, Glasgow, Scotland

"If people have to pay to get in less people will go and soon nobody will go to the playground and then there won't be any playgrounds because they're never used!"

Daniel, 10, Orkney, England

"I think that it is an outrage because mums and dads pay enough already. Parks are places where you can talk and play with your friends, it's not somewhere where you should pay."

Amelia, 9, Essex, England

"I think it is so unfair! I don't think you should pay to play if you haven't go a back garden."

Abbie, 10, London, England

"No I don't think it's fair I think they should pay £1.00 because they make a bit of profit making people pay £2.50."

Georgia, 9, Essex, England

"I don't think there's any point in paying. It's just a playground for children."

Natalie, 11, Leicester, England

"I say no! Our parents pay enough money for things already."

Dylan, 10, Glasgow, Scotland

"Of course not! The reason why it's there in the FIRST place is because people pay TAX. The council uses tax to fund the park, so why should WE pay?!"

Daniella, 11, London, England

"As if times weren't hard enough with money already... they're making us pay to use playgrounds?! It's out of order!"

Mary, 13, London, England

"I think it's ridiculous! A child would have to pay to play, unacceptable!! What if someone did not have enough money to pay that price? Parks are supposed to be fun!"

Jessica, 10, Manchester, England

"What?! Some people live in flats and don't have much money and no back garden and it's really unfair on them!"

Zachary, 9, London, England

"I think it's silly! What are they going to do next? Put a charge on smiling?!"

Kat, 11, London, England

"I can't believe it! I think that people should do a petition about this!"

Rocky, 13, Oxfordshire, England

"No, because I don't think it's fair!"

Beth, 6, Cardiff, Wales

"It's totally unfair! Why should you have to pay to play? It's just shocking!"

Caitlin, 10, Glasgow, Scotland

"I totally disagree with this situation because it's unfair for parents to pay a fee just to enter a park and have family fun. You should be able to enter a park and not pay."

Ellie, 12, Surrey, England

"I think it's mean to make you pay to play in the park. It's like trying to sell a small chocolate bar for £10!"

Stephanie, 12, Norfolk, England

"I think it's really sad that this is what our country has come to. The government are always saying that kids should do more outdoor activities, but it seems like it's cheaper to stay indoors and play on computer games."

Beth, 13, Stoke-on-Trent, England

"I think it's horrid!"

Beckie, 9, Herefordshire, England

"What?! I thinks that's terrible. A playground is somewhere for kids to play and have fun! If people have to pay for it, they'll probably just go to another public park instead."

Chloe, 12, Glasgow, Scotland

"I think the charge is a good idea as they will probably get enough money to build new things to play with."

Shane, 13, London, England

"It's not fair!"

Harry, 11, Aberdeenshire, England

"I think it's unfair because it's not happening anywhere else."

Iqra, 11, Manchester, England

"Of course it's fair! How else can they get money? These people just need to stop whining if they want to play!"

James, 8, Sussex, England

"It's very unfair to charge for a playground because it's a public service."

Matthew, 12, Motherwell, Scotland

"I don't think it's right at all that the government are making people pay to use a playground. I can understand if people charge you to use a theme park but not a playground. It's not as if the playground is their own private property!"

Maryam, 12, London, England

"It isn't fair at all. They should be encouraging kids to get active, and making them pay won't encourage them."

Anessa, 14, Yorkshire, England

"I think it's disgraceful! I live right near a playground and you shouldn't have to pay for a few swings, a slide and an an obstacle course! Kids love them and paying for it would mean less fitness and less fun!"

Abbie, 9, Wales

"This is absolutely ridiculous and I don't think you should have to pay to get into a play park!"

Kirst, 11, Stockton-on-Tees, England

"How are you supposed to pay if you are poor? You do deserve SOME privileges in your life!"

Phoebe, 12, Kent, England

"It only costs £2.50 guys! Take a chill pill!"

Jasmine, 11, London, England

"It's so unfair. I visit my local playground nearly every weekend in the summer. I find it a great way to chat and meet up with my friends. I won't be able to do that anymore though as myself and my brothers won't be able to spend £2.50 each time we visit it!"

Saoirse, 12, London, England

"Parents want to let their children out to play and enjoy themselves, not wait in a queue to pay and play. It's outrageous!"

Jasmine, 12, Kent, England

"We should be able to have fun in a playground without paying!"

Louis, 10, Scotland

"I think it's absolutely APPALLING to have to pay! Where did it all go wrong?"

Izzy, 11, Derbyshire, England

Maria, 11, Zurich, Switzerland

"It's not fair because some people might not be able to afford it and it's a public thing!"

Louise, 11, Kildare, Ireland

"I think that it is terrible you have to pay to go to parks. Parks are meant for joy but it is not joy when the parents have to pay A LOT of money to just get in."
