Race to save oil-soaked rockhopper penguins

Penguin from the Tristan da Cunha islands.

The race is on to save hundreds of oil-soaked penguins from the Tristan da Cunha islands in the Atlantic ocean.

A boat crash caused an oil spill in the islands, which are home to almost half the world's population of northern rockhopper penguins.

The birds are now being given fluids and vitamins and a local boat went out to catch fish for the hungry penguins.

The process of washing the oil off will start once the birds are feeling better.

A swimming pool on the islands has also been closed for people - instead it's being used to look after penguins who are not as badly oiled as the others.
