Filming begins on The Hobbit

Martin Freeman

Filming on the two Hobbit movies has begun in New Zealand, following months of delays.

Work on the Lord of the Rings prequels was delayed because of funding problems and a row over actors' wages.

The films star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, and the first film is due to be released in late 2012.

Three films of The Lord of the Rings books came out between 2001 and 2003. They made about £3.26bn and won 16 Oscars between them.
