Should smoking in cars be banned?

One of the children who went to Downing Street to hand in the petition

YOUR views on smoking in cars

Mums and dads who smoke when they're in the car with you are coming under pressure to stop.

More than 15,000 people have signed a petition asking the government to make it illegal for people to smoke when there are kids in the car, but what do you think?

Have you ever been stuck in a car with someone who's smoking? What was it like? Did it bother you or did you just open a window?

Do your mum or dad smoke? Maybe you've persuaded someone in your family to give up. Did it work?

Your comments

"I think smoking in cars should be banned because it builds up tar in your lungs, affecting your breathing. I don't have anyone in my family who smokes, but I know that it stinks and sometimes can make you choke even when you walk by someone smoking, never mind sitting in a small space with smoke around you."

Ellie, 12, Wirral, England

"Yes it should because it can cause an accident or affect children and clog their lungs. I am not allowed to go near smoke and my parents don't smoke near me or in the car."

Zoe, 11, London, England

"I think smoking in cars should be banned because passengers don't choose to smoke but have to breathe in the smoky air which is bad for their lungs."

Spike, 11, Liverpool, England

"I totally agree with these kids. It's just not fair that you could be in a car with a smoker endangering your life. And it takes their mind off your driving and could cause an accident!"

Hannah, 13, Worcestershire, England

"I think smoking should be banned in cars because it stinks and ruins the car journey. It also affects the non-smokers in the car through no fault of their own."

Matt, 12, Devon, England

"I think smoking in cars when children are passengers is a form of child cruelty and should be banned."

Phoebe, 12, Singapore

"Yes!"

Fatema, 14, London, England

"Smoking is a disgusting habit and in cars it is just vile! Firstly, it distracts the driver from the road and secondly, smoking can kill and frankly makes you smell of the foul odour that is smoke! But it is the adult's decision whether to smoke or not so frankly they are bringing the plagues of bad habits and ill health on themselves!"

Rheanna, 10, Manchester, England

"I think smoking in cars should be banned because it could damage people's health and they could choke on it. Also with foreign tourists sightseeing, it gives a bad impression of the UK."

"Yes, because it can cause crashes."

Tina, 10, Sussex, England

Michael, 8, Essex, England

"I think it is the car owner's choice if they or whoever may smoke in their car. It may be bad for your health but it's becoming over the top, smoking should be fine anywhere!"

Tom, 14, Shropshire, England

"I think that it's the adults choice. They know the risk of other people breathing in the smoke. We can't ban smoking everywhere. I have a member of my family who smokes and it hasn't affected me and I feel it is their choice whether they should be allowed to or not. We should be concentrating on other matters such as under-age smoking and drinking and we should just be grateful to them for what they are doing that for us."

Flora, 14, Norfolk, England

"I think you should be allowed to smoke in cars because you shouldn't get in a car with someone who smokes, if you don't like it. Or, you could just ask them if they wouldn't mind not smoking?"

Jenny, 12, Barnsley, England

Angharad, 12, Plymouth, England

"I think that smoking in cars is very dangerous because if you have children in the back, they are going to breath it in and that's bad."

Haylie, 14, London, England

"I think it should be banned, because it sets bad examples and it can damage kids' health!"

Elsie, 12, Shropshire, England

"Smoking in cars should be banned, because other people in the car could get asthma from passive smoking."

Bethany, 12, Cheshire, England

"I truly think it should be stopped. Smoking anywhere is abominable, and very damaging for the smoker or people around them. Smoking in cars is even worse as it can take your mind off your driving, and it causes you to have only one hand on the wheel, a dangerous thing to do. Most children I know hate adults smoking near them, and I do too!"

"I think it should! I hate it when my mum smokes and I have asthma, so it's twice as bad!"

"I think it should be banned. It allows children to breathe it in. It also isn't very nice for people in other cars."

"I'm embarrassed asking people to stop smoking in cars!"

Ismail, 11, London, England

"I think it should be banned, although I don't have any relatives who smoke!"

Xanthe, 10, Yorkshire, England

"Yes, I do think that smoking in cars should be banned. My parents don't smoke, but I know that smoking is very bad for you. "I think you shouldn't be allowed to smoke in cars because it's bad for you and it absolutely stinks!"

Genny, 12, Worcestershire, England

Amelia, 11, Northamptonshire, England

"Smoking affects every individual differently. Some people are very prone to the bad effects of smoking, and some people never so much as get a cough from it. It should be up to the driver, as it's just another distraction for the police on the roads, when they could be dealing with a serious crime."

Anto, 13, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland

"It should be banned, it's so bad for you and it stinks!"

Sophia, 14, London, England

"To stop the car filling up with smoke, just open the window! What is someone meant to do if they are in a traffic jam on the motorway and need a smoke. They can hardly get of the car for five minutes in the middle of the motorway. If there's anyone with a severe breathing problem in the car then yes, don't smoke in the car, but other than that it really shouldn't be a problem."
