Queen talks about sport in speech

The Queen

Queen's speech to focus on sport

The Queen used her annual Christmas Day message to highlight the importance of sport in building communities.

Her Majesty said she has seen how sport can bring "people together from all backgrounds, from all walks of life."

The broadcast included footage of her grandsons Princes William and Harry playing football with a group of children from Lesotho in Africa.

Christmas messages are usually recorded at Buckingham Palace, but this year it was recorded at Hampton Court Palace.

The Royals spent the morning at a traditional church service at the Sandringham Estate in eastern England.

The Christmas message was broadcast later on BBC One.

Many people were surprised that there was no mention of the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011.

First message

The Queen delivered her very first TV message live to the nation and its colonies on 25 December 1957.
