X Factor: One Direction are OUT

X Factor finalists One Direction came third, behind Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson

One Direction have come third in the X Factor live final, leaving Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle to battle it out to win the show.

The three acts all performed on Sunday, before viewer votes were frozen and counted to see who would be going.

The teenagers looked gutted when the result was read out, but said they'd had a great time on the show and will stay together as a group.

Their mentor Simon Cowell said it was only the beginning of their career.

"I'm absolutely gutted for them, but for everyone who's bothered to pick up the phone over the past few weeks, I really appreciate it," he said.

"All I can say is, this is just the beginning for these boys."

The fourth finalist, Cher Lloyd, left the show on Saturday after all four acts performed duets with some of the biggest names in pop.

Cher performed with Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, while One Direction teamed up with Robbie Williams.

Rebecca sang with Christina Aguilera and Matt was joined on stage by Rihanna.

Matt Cardle is Dannii Minogue's last act in the competition.

If Rebecca Ferguson wins, she'll help make her mentor Cheryl Cole the X Factor's most successful judge as it will be her third win in a row!
