To help kick start the project, Jambo, the life-like robot gorilla came along - was he impressed by his new pals?

Human height sculptures of the animal will be popping up on the city's streets and parks next summer.

It's also hoped the sculptures will make everyone aware of the threats facing gorillas and other apes in the wild.

But they won't be staying white - local artists, community groups and schools will be giving them a makeover first....
