Book Review: The Longest Whale Song - Jacqueline Wilson

The Longest Whale Song cover

Author

Jacqueline Wilson

The story

Ella really isn't thrilled when she finds out her mum is going to have a baby with her dull step-dad Jack. But when Ella's mum falls into a coma after giving birth she and Jack are forced together.

With a new baby to look after, an annoying step-dad nagging her and a best friend who has just dumped her for someone else, Ella's life isn't looking great. Surely things have got to get better!

But when Ella starts a whale project, things start to change. She finds some new friends, and a new song... could the whale song be the key to bringing mum out of the coma? You'll have to read it to find out!

The characters

Ella is the main character. She's a bit grumpy but has lots of reasons to be! She tries really hard to help her mum but is finding it difficult coping with it all. When baby Samson comes along she realises maybe having a new brother isn't all that bad!

Jack is Ella's dull step-dad. They don't really get on. As you read more of the book you can't help but start to like him, especially when he keeps showing off his cooking skills.

Samson is Ella's new baby brother. He's so cute! We also love Ella's new friend Joseph and his tasty fudge! Yum!

Highlights

The story is quite sad so you might need to have some tissues nearby, just to be prepared! But don't worry there are quite a few funny parts too.

We loved the part when Ella starts trying to speak like a whale, though no-one else is a fan!

Any weak bits?

We'd really like to know a bit more about what happens when Ella's mum wakes up. A few more chapters would have been great!

Unputdownable?

It's definitely a great read with lots of twists to keep you interested. You'll want to get to the end just to find out what is going to happen to Ella's mum!
