Ricky reviews The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Nicholas Cage and Alfred Molina in The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Release date

11 August 2010.

The Plot

Disney's latest blockbuster is packed with action and amazing special effects. It's exactly what you'd expect from a major summer movie release.

Balthazar Blake is a mysterious apprentice who gives a young student a crash course in the art and science of magic in order to save the world from a few bad guys.

Nicholas Cage and Jake Cherry in The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Nicholas Cage and Jake Cherry are two of the main stars of the film

There's plenty of fantasy adventure here with a love story thrown in for good measure. Dave, the young sorcerer and college student uses the magic he's learnt to impress a girl.

But the focus of the film is the race to stop the villains from destroying the world. Dave has to learn magic fast and there are plenty of laughs along the way as he makes loads of mistakes and keeps getting things wrong.

The stars

A favourite with the oldies, Nicolas Cage plays Balthazar, a 1,000-year-old sorcerer.

Jay Baruchel plays the young apprentice Dave, you might recognise his voice from last year's hit animation How To Train Your Dragon.

Best bits

The Sorcerer's Apprentice had me on the edge of my seat right from the start.

If you like the BBC series Merlin, with a bit of Harry Potter and a dash of Spider Man thrown in, then this film will be right up your street!

I also loved the music in the film. They used an excellent track called Secrets by One Republic. I downloaded it straight after I saw the film!

Fave characters

Dave the young college student is great. He's not very keen on learning magic at first, but eventually the geeky character gets the hang of it.

Any weak bits?

The whole love story between Dave and Becky, a girl at his university, is a bit boring. I think it took up a bit too much of the film.

Hit or miss?

A hit.
