Giant hailstone in America breaks world record

Check out the biggest hailstone ever recorded!

Take a look at this huge hailstone that fell in America - it's the size of a small football and is the biggest hailstone ever recorded!

It dropped during a big storm in the town of Vivian, South Dakota, which caused lots of damage. Falling rocks of ice smashed through roofs and cars.

The hailstone measured 20.5cm wide and weighed in at almost 1kg - about the same as a large tub of butter.

The guy who found the hailstone said it was even bigger but some of it melted.

Hail is created inside storm clouds and is made of solid ice.

The storm caused a power cut so he couldn't use his freezer to keep the hailstone frozen.

Les Scott said: "I'm glad I got it I guess. But I'm sad about the town of Vivian."

This hailstone has broken the previous records for weight and size, both set in America.

The previous weight record was set in 1970 in Kansas when a hailstone about 750g was found.

The old record for size was set seven years ago by a hailstone 17.8cm wide. It was discovered in the state of Nebraska.
