Whale jumps on couple's yacht

Whale jumping onto a boat

A couple had a lucky escape when a whale apparently jumped onto their boat off the coast of South Africa.

Paloma Werner and Ralph Mothes were on a whale-watching trip in the seas off Cape Town when they got a bit closer than expected!

The southern right whale leapt out of the water and onto their yacht, snapping the mast.

They only had a few seconds to take cover, and a nearby tourist snapped this amazing photo.

This type of whale is known to have bad eyesight.

Ms Werner said: "Suddenly I heard my partner shout and when I looked around, I saw the huge thing breaching on to the deck.

"I took cover as the mast came crashing down. I saw my partner, Ralph, dive for cover behind the yacht's wheel.

"Then the whale slid down the side of the boat and back into the water."

She doesn't think the whale did it on purpose.

She added: "I still like whales!"
