Single Review: Preeya - Shimmy

Preeya Kalidas

Release date

26 July 2010.

The style

You may know Preeya Kalidas as Amira from EastEnders but she quit the soap earlier in the year to become a singer.

This is her first pop single and it is a mix of pop and dance with a bit of a Bollywood sound as well.

Although it is good to hear a track that mixes these different types of music, it doesn't sound that original.

The words

Will Preeya's first single be a hit?
Will Preeya's first single be a hit?

Preeya is mainly singing about dancing but she ends up saying the same few words like "Shimmy" and "1, 2, step" over and over again. Although it's easy to sing along, the words get a bit boring quite quickly and there isn't really a story to the song.

Will you still be humming it next week?

Probably not. It's quite a forgettable song and the tune doesn't really get stuck in your head.

Will it make the charts?

Preeya is already quite well known and will probably have a few fans from her days in EastEnders.

The song isn't very good though and it probably won't do that well in the charts. Hopefully some of the other songs on her album will be a bit better.

NR rating:

Three out of five

Your Comments

"The song is good, it's not that bad."

Maria, 13, London, England

"I tried listening to this song and I think it might be too much for her voice. It doesn't sound that original."

Kim, 13, London, England

"I really, really hate this song! In my opinion it is the worst song ever."

Millie, 12, Norfolk, England

"I don't think her voice is talented. The song is boring but quite catchy. There's nothing really special about her voice or the song, but at least it's good she's trying. She probably won't get anywhere."

Zari, 10, West Midlands, England

"She should stick to acting but she's got a good voice. The song does get a bit boring!!"

Faiza, 11, London, England

"Horrible. Not very good but catchy."

Kaitee, 13, London, England

"I don't really enjoy this song. It's not very catchy and she keeps repeating the word 'shimmy'. Sorry Preeya but I think you should keep to acting. The song is good but not my fave, please don't take offence!"

Chelsea, 10, Cambridgeshire, England

"I think the song is excellent and she has made England proud. It's a great way to start a pop career. Thank you Preeya!"

Megan, 11, Colchester, England

"I heard this on the radio and hated it from the start. She should definitely stick to the acting."

Alex, 11, Bury, England

"I love Eastenders and so when I heard that Preeya was releasing a single I just had to listen to it. Preeya has an OK voice but the song gets a bit boring particularly when she repeats Shimmy a lot! Stick to acting Preeya!"

Darcy, 12, Leeds, England

"I think Preeya is a brilliant actor and should stick to that, however her song is brilliant!"

Chantal, 11, Essex, England

"I love it! Preeya's got a very strong and lovely voice. She should do better than people who cannot sing AT ALL like Cheryl Cole. Good for her!"

Jaden, 12, London, England

"Great, keep on going!"

Chloe, 10, Cornwall, England

"I like it because it has a good beat and it's cool. It's a summer hit!"

Chloe, 11, Lancashire, England

"To be honest, this song is catchy but really boring!"

Zara, 13, London, England

"I love this song but I hate the part when she keeps saying 'shimmy, shimmy'. It's really annoying. I loved her in Eastenders, she should keep to acting because she's really good at it."

Runa, 13, Bradford, England

"I hate it, she can't sing. STICK to the acting Preeya!"

Demi, 12, London, England

"She is really good. Good on her for singing and being an actress in the soaps."

Olivia, 11, Manchester, England

"Fab, I love her new single."

Aimee, 10, Fife, Scotland

"Shimmy Shimmy all the way."

Mo, 9, London, England

"I like Shimmy but I love Mumzy better on this song, he is amazing."

Jasmine, 10, Bromley, England

"GREAT song but she should stick with acting!"

Fawziyah, 13, Bolton, England

"The song just wasn't catchy enough, but I still love her voice!"

Angharad, 13, Salisbury, England

"I knew already that Preeya was a great actress but now she is a great singer too. With a couple more big hits she could become big in America as well as here!"

Mary, 12, Glasgow, Scotland

"It's alright but it needs to have a bit more with it."

Chloe, 11, Lancashire, England

"I think it is OK but I didn't know she was a singer. This song doesn't really suit her either but it's OK."

Hannah, 12, South Lanarkshire, Scotland

"I think it's great that Preeya is doing something different from acting but I don't think the track is that good. She doesn't seem to have her own style and sounds a bit like all the other pop and dance songs. I can't wait to hear the rest of her album and see if it's any better!"

Eve, 12, Cheshire, England

"I loved her in Eastenders and I wish she hadn't left. I love her voice and the song. Go Preeya!"

Beth, 12, Stoke-on-Trent, England

"The song is great!"

Lauren, 10, London, England
