Jermain Defoe shoots England into World Cup last 16

Jermain Defoe celebrates his goal

Great news for England fans - Fabio Capello's squad is through to the World Cup knockout stages, after beating Slovenia 1-0.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored in the 23rd minute, after he turned a cross from James Milner into a goal.

The win means England finish second in Group C behind the USA. England now face Group D winner Germany on Sunday.

England played much better compared to their previous two games, creating several chances for a second goal.

Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and captain Steven Gerrard all made goalbound shots.

Despite dominating the game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, the lack of a second goal meant a nervous second half for England.

But Capello's men held on - a huge relief for the squad, who needed a win to make sure they progressed to the next stage.

Over in the other Group C game, the USA looked as if they were going home until a stoppage time goal from striker Landon Donovan put them ahead of Algeria 1-0 - and top of the group.
