Cap lowered onto leaking oil well

The latest attempts to cap the leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico are almost complete.

The oil company BP has placed a cap over the broken pipe, which is spewing thousands of litres of oil into the ocean.

It's not yet clear is the cap has stopped the oil leaking, but the head of BP said we should know if it's worked by the end of Friday.

President Barack Obama has sent a £47m bill to BP to pay for the clear up.

He is due to visit the area on Friday, for the third time since the spill began in May.

Before capping the well, BP used underwater robots to saw off the end of the pipe.

The oil began leaking into the Gulf of Mexico on 20 April when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded.
