Rooney's injury only "minor ligament damage"

Manchester United have said the scan of Wayne Rooney's ankle revealed only "minor ligament damage", and not the fracture they feared.

"We are pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture," a United spokesperson told the club's website.

Old Trafford hasn't said how long Rooney will take to recover, but manager Alex Ferguson is expected to reveal more details on Friday.

Sports experts reckon the news means he'll be able to play in the World Cup.

England fans have been waiting for news about the star striker's leg after he fell over on his ankle during United's Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

The striker limped off the pitch on Tuesday after turning over on his right leg in the build-up to Bayern's winning goal. Manchester United lost 2-1.
