New Twilight book 'will be free'

The Twilight books

It's the news all Twilight fans have been waiting for - author Stephanie Meyer has written a new book in the series - and it's free!

The book is a spin-off and is called The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner - and tells the story of a small character from the third book, Eclipse.

It goes on sale on 5 June 2010, but will be available to read free online just two days later.

Stephanie said she'd done it to say thank you to all her loyal fans.

Bree Tanner featured in Eclipse - the third book in the hugely popular Twilight series. She is one of the newborn vampire army, and was turned by Victoria when she was desperate to get revenge for her partner James' death.

Stephanie said she surprised herself when Bree's story turned into a 192-page book.

She started writing Bree's history when she was editing Eclipse in 2005, so she could understand her character better.

Later, she started working on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, and thought she might include Bree's story in there.

But it ended up so long that she realised it was a short book in itself.

'Gift'

"Since this story had always been an extra for me, and was meant to be released with the Guide, I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free," Stephanie explained on her website.

"You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift."

But the book will also be available to buy in the shops with a "cool cover" for the fans who want an actual book for their collection, she added.
